Goodbye to data privacy in ChatGPT! More people are using artificial intelligence for many things, they even chat with it. ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, is one of the most popular artificial intelligence tools. Do you have a question or want to look for some information? ChatGPT is your best ally. However, a recent court order in the United States, warned the OpenAI company about the obligation of keeping all the digital conversations generated by users. What’s the problem here? Data protection. This situation has led to debates on technology regulation, mostly in Europe.

We are all aware of the huge impact ChatGPT and all artificial intelligence tools have on current society, but do we know what’s behind them? Let’s get informed on this situation because it is very necessary.

This is an artificial intelligence (AI) program developed by OpenAI which allows you to maintain a digital conversation with, as if it were another human being. It is capable of communicating with us because of years of training with millions of texts on the internet. This way ChatGPT has learnt how we write, speak and communicate.

This might have sounded crazy when it first started, but now… it is probably the most used program on the internet. Many people use it everyday since it is very useful for: answering questions about many topics, helping you write texts, explaining complex ideas in an easier way, translating texts, and basically almost anything you can imagine.

What’s the problem now?

Recently, a judge in the United States ordered OpenAI to keep every digital conversation from every single user with ChatGPT. It doesn’t matter if you have deleted them, the company will keep  them too.

It’s very interesting how all this started. The New York Times began a legal process against OpenAI because they saw the company was using their articles, without the newspaper’s permission,  to train the artificial intelligence. The New York Times saw ChatGPT was able to reproduce similar texts to the ones on the newspaper and that’s why the judge decided to order the preservation of the digital conversations, to see if there are proofs about this.

What’s OpenAI’s take on this?

Of course, the company doesn’t agree with the newspaper. They say this decision is against the rules for users’ privacy because keeping their conversations could be dangerous for their security and privacy. What OpenAI is going to do is to appeal  and fight for a change in the decision.

In case this decision couldn’t be changed, OpenAI says the conversations will be kept in a different and protected system, so that nobody without permission could get access to them.

Our role on this fight

We can’t do much about it, we either keep using ChatGPT or not. However, it’s important to know how this will affect us.

You should know, before this decision, you could delete your conversations with the chatbot and they were nowhere forever. Now, this is not possible, even though you delete them, they will be kept on their server. It will affect every ChatGPT user no matter if you use the free version or the premium one.

Tips for using this AI program

You should know that, if you decide to start or continue using ChatGPT, the AI isn’t always right and it shouldn’t be asked about health, legal or financial advice without an expert’s supervision. Last, but not least, it’s tru OpenAI protects your data, but you should never share personal or sensitive data with an AI.

We need to take care with how exposed you are on the internet. From the comfort of our devices we might not see the danger, but the internet is a very risky and unknown world for many users. So, you’d better get information about the website and program you use online, so that your data privacy keeps being private.
